Collins College IT Instructor Applies Skills at Daughter’s Elementary School

Tempe, AZ (December 12, 2007) - In recognition of Scott Burrell's dedication to Falcon Hill Elementary School, in Mesa, Arizona, he was recognized by the Mesa Unified School District as Volunteer of the Month in October 2007. The Mesa School District has over 74,000 students, approximately 4,700 teachers, and 77 schools.

"Scott has done the most awesome things with our students in the computer lab and is a tremendous asset to our school. Not only is he active in the classroom teaching our students computer skills; he also helps us with our technology needs," said Jacque Lowell, fifth grade teacher at Falcon Hill Elementary School.

Scott Burrell considers himself to be one lucky man. He has a great job that allows him to participate in his children's education. For the past three years, Burrell has been running computer labs on Fridays at Falcon Hill. Burrell said the volunteer position just evolved. When he started visiting his daughter's school, he made copies, graded papers, and did what ever the teacher needed. Things quickly changed, however, when staff discovered his computer skills. From that time on, he has been a regular Friday addition in the computer lab.

"As an IT instructor at Collins College, my schedule allows me to leave campus on Fridays, so I can volunteer at my daughter's elementary school," said Scott Burrell, IT Department Chair at Collins College.

Burrell has followed his daughter through her different grade levels and in the process has started teaching other computer skills as well. Burrell has taught fourth graders how to build websites, fifth graders how to use a host of different computer applications, and sixth graders how to integrate all their knowledge into working documents and presentations.

Next year Burrell's daughter graduates to junior high, but luckily for Falcon Hill, his son will be entering kindergarten.
