Collins College Film Students Launch Website on Steps Involved in Filmmaking

Tempe, AZ (December 7, 2007) - An advanced visual-effects class at Collins College ( www.collinscollege.edu ) launched a "how to" website on the steps they took to create their own independent film, Portal. The purpose of the website is to guide novice filmmakers through the entire process of making a movie. The website is www.mediafarm.tv/portal.

According to Michael Bostick, Collins College Visual Effects Instructor, "Collins provides students with a career-focused, hands-on education. Students were able to create an entire movie and then a website depicting the creative and technical process. It was a great class project."

Portal, a science-fiction adventure that involves time travel from an ancient Mayan city, was created as a class project. Nine advanced film students spent approximately 20 weeks creating the movie while simultaneously recording different phases of the process for the website, including the importance of story boarding, how to shoot miniature models to create drama and realism, lighting and audio techniques, and how to digitally create a background using a green screen.

Portal's plot centers on achieving immortality through the discovery of three portals. One of the main characters is aware of the portals' powers. The other character's knowledge of how to reach eternity slowly evolves as the story unfolds.

Bostick has recently started to enter Portal in film festivals and has won two awards, one for technical achievement and one for special effects. In addition, six of the nine students who participated in the film have graduated with Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Film & Video and are working professionally as visual effect artists throughout the U.S.

Collins College has one of the most advanced film and video schools in Arizona. The college recently celebrated the opening of its new 14 th Street Studio in Tempe, Arizona, that houses Collins' School of Film, Video, and Visual FX. Collins offers a Bachelor of Arts in Film & Video Production and an Associate of Arts degree in Digital Video Production. In addition, the school has professional-grade film equipment typically not found in higher education.
