(PHOENIX, AZ October 31, 2006) – Collins College, a school of design and technology, is participating in the fourth annual Techathalon sponsored by the Arizona Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs Saturday, November 4, 2006, in Gilbert, Arizona. Faculty and staff from Collins media arts, animation, Graphic Design and graphic design departments will provide demonstrations in the Exploratorium – exhibits of fun-filled activities in science, technology, engineering, and math carnival. “The demonstrations in the Exploratorium will provide children an exciting opportunity to explore cutting-edge technology,” said Denise Kronsteiner, director of marketing and communications for the Boys & Girls Club of the East Valley. Techathalon is designed to bring children ages 6-18 across Arizona together to design, build and create using the latest technology in age-appropriate projects. In addition to the Exploratorium, Techathalon features four “Challenge Events” encompassing graphic design, technical known-how, productivity, software mastery, and general technology knowledge. Demonstrations at Collins’ exhibits will expose youth to opportunities in graphic design, film and video, and animation. Collins instructors will demonstrate how designers manipulate photos using Adobe PhotoShop, a professional image editing software program. Instructors will demonstrate how computer animators bring characters to life through drawing and rendering skills, and will discuss the skills needed to enter the field of animation. They will also demonstrate the college’s high-definition cameras, allowing participants to use the cameras and view the playback monitors. “Techathalon is a tremendous opportunity for businesses and higher education institutions to improve learning through technology and to teach our youth how to grow and develop in today’s technology-rich environment,” said John Calman, president of Collins College. “I am pleased to see so many of our staff and faculty donating their time to participate in such an important event.” Hundreds of children from around the state will gather at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley Gilbert Branch located at 44 North Oak Street, Gilbert, Arizona. The event starts at 9:00 A.M. and lasts until 5:00 P.M. For more information please visit www.techathalon.org.
