Upcoming Graphic Design Workshops

Collins College now offers one-day Graphic Design Workshops to aspiring graphic designers with interests in Flash, Photoshop, and Illustrator.  The workshops also provide a valuable forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

All courses are led by faculty at the Collins College main campus, with brand new classrooms and brand new spaces to explore.

Schedule of upcoming workshops:

Illustrator • July 10, 17, 24 • Shane Hsu

This workshop covers the foundations of vector-based artwork in order to create digital illustrations, graphics, and interfaces. Students can develop skills to create their own illustrations and will experiment with type to use as a graphical element. 

Upon completion student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the use of vector-based art to create images and graphics for print, web or video use;
  • Experiment and manipulate type for graphic purposes; and
  • Create original illustrations using Adobe Illustrator®, a vector- based software.

This workshop will be held in 2-hour sessions over 3 days, April 24, May 1 and 8, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm for a total of 6 hours of instruction.

The instructor for this course will be Shane Hsu
Shane has a B.A. & A.A. from Brigham Young University, Hawaii; A.A., Al Collins Graphic Design School, and an A.A., China Junior College of Marine Technology, Taipei, Taiwan; His work in the field includes: Porcher American China, ceramic artist; Nan-Shan Life Insurance Co., graphic designer; Chen-Feng Advertising Co., graphic designer; Tian-Fan Animation Co., animator; freelance artist: Wallace Resources, US Home, Market Direct, Coca-Cola (Malaysia Campaign), Cyberdyne, Tux & Tails.

Photoshop • July 31 and August 7, 14 • David Pinter

This workshop has been designed to give students a basic understanding of raster-based software (Adobe Photoshop®) to create, manipulate, and modify images. Focus will be on understanding the tools to modify and/or create images and image formats for print, video and web applications.

Upon completion student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the use of raster-based art for print, web or video use;
  • Demonstrate competency in utilization of Photoshop tools;
  • Differentiate between raster and vector images; and
  • Determine appropriate resolution based upon output.

This workshop will be held in 2-hour sessions over 3 days May 15, 22, 29, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm for a total of 6 hours of instruction.

The instructor for this course will be David Pinter.
David has studied at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona and has eleven years of occupational experience. His outstanding contributions in the field include Flash animation and interactive CD development for iMediaPro, Palm Springs, CA; Web developer and multimedia instructor at North Harris College and Cy-Fair College, Houston, TX; graphic arts, visual promotions and illustrator, The Alta Center for Communication Arts, Phoenix, AZ; David is also a contemporary pianist and has composed 29 CDs, most recently, Autumn Rain ©.

Flash • June 5, 12, and 19 • Dave Bell

This workshop will serve as a foundation course in Adobe Flash® covering drawing, animation, importing external graphics, audio and video elements to construct effective web interfaces.

Upon completion student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate basic understanding of the principles of drawing and animating in Flash;
  • Demonstrate competency in utilization of Flash tools;
  • Determine when and where to use Flash for the web; and
  • Create a Flash timeline.

This workshop will be held in 2-hour sessions over 3 days, June 5, 12, and 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm for a total of 6 hours of instruction.

The instructor for this course will be Dave Bell.
Dave has a B.A., Visual Communication and Multimedia from Collins College. He is a freelance designer/artist, Web designer and videographer. His clients include Stonehard Fitness, Hollister Foundation, Performance Sales and Marketing, One Vision Childrens’ Foundation and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
